Meet Emily, the dolly Grandma and I sewed together at her sewing machine. Grandma was a seamstress when she came here to America, and I knew she and I would have such a good time working side-by-side on this hand-made doll kit. We used the sewing machine and the pedal that seemed to run away too quickly, some hand stitching to close the hands and feet once dolly was stuffed, and some embroidery stitches to make her darling face.
Meet Grandma.
Here she is with her embroidery and her hoop while kitty tries to play with the floss. Grandma taught her daughters to sew too, and my mother not only sewed me this dress from a pattern, but smocked it lovingly too.
To stitch or not to stitch? If that’s the question, I know my answer is yes. I must. Inspired by the skilled artists before me. Thanks, Mom. Thanks, Grandma!
Buttons and patches and the cold wind blowing,
The days pass quickly when I am sewing.
