There’s something quietly magical about snail mail.
Sending someone a greeting card—instead of a text or an email—that sparks joy twice: once for the one who is preparing it and again for the person opening the envelope. As Valentine’s Day approaches, I find myself returning to this ritual with a full heart and a desk scattered with cheerful greeting cards, colorful envelopes, vintage-inspired postage stamps, and my favorite pen.

I linger over each card, thinking about the person it’s meant for. A soft floral illustration feels just right for this loved one, then pink, orange, and red hearts for another. Here is another one I painted when I arranged coffee beans into a heart shape on my table. That will be for a dear friend who can’t start the day without her cup. My mom, of course, gets the floral wreath with rhinestones—and a very sentimental message of gratitude tucked inside. We Moms love that!
That blank interior is my favorite part. It’s an open invitation to slow down and express love, appreciation, and memories in a way that feels deeply personal. Writing by hand feels like the right touch for relationships that deserve more than a keyboarded message. Each word carries intention, each line a small act of care. I like to think of it as a hug in an envelope.

Once finished, the cards are tucked into the mailbox to begin their journey. Half the fun is imagining when they’ll arrive—and the smile they’ll bring when the mailbox is opened. Amid postcards, bills, and junk mail, a small red envelope feels like a tiny celebration waiting to be happen.
Hopscotch Art valentines began over twenty years ago, when I made each one entirely by hand. Paper doilies, craft felt, heart appliqués, tiny buttons, delicate ribbons, collage papers, painted swatches, and handwritten greetings came together in lovingly imperfect layers. When we moved from our home state of Pennsylvania to Colorado, those handmade Valentines became my way of sending love back home. Snail mail has always been a beautiful way to stay connected.

Today, my Valentines are printed from original watercolors and modern calligraphy, but one thing hasn’t changed—they always include a handwritten message inside. That personal touch is at the heart of everything I create.
Valentine’s Day isn’t just for couples. It’s for everyone. It’s a long-standing tradition of expressing love, friendship, and gratitude—and a perfect excuse to spark joy in both the sender’s heart and the receiver’s.
With this season’s Valentines now on their way, my creative focus turns toward spring. Daffodils, meadow flowers, bunnies, and chicks are beginning to fill my sketchbook. The joy of snail mail remains the same—sending love, one envelope at a time, all year long. Won’t you join me in making mailboxes more cheery?
